The MACBA 2 is a spacious and beautiful 95m2 apartment which can sleep up to 10 people and is located in the Ciutat Vella (Old Town) of Barcelona, Spain. Only 2 minutes from Las Ramblas on foot, the location is unbeatable. You’re in the middle of the Gothic Quarter which is rich in history, starting from before the Romans invaded, and each period left its distinctive mark on the city. See evidence of the aqueduct which provided ancient Barcelona with water and the remains of the Roman walls which still stand, some hidden through narrow streets. ... more details >
Go to the Medieval Plaça del Rei, where Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand first learned of the “New World” from Christopher Columbus. See the Gothic Cathedral in the historic centre and the winding streets surrounding it. Today see some of the most famous contemporary architects works at the Macba (contemporary art museum) by Richard Meier, and sculptures by Frank Gehry. Cheap bars and restaurants abound in this area, with everything from inexpensive typical tapas at the Boqueria market on the bustling Las Ramblas to the newest in Catalan cuisine at Comerç 24 in the Born neighbourhood. The possibilities are endless. MACBA 2 is pleasant place to rest after a long day of pounding the pavement (or relaxing on the beach). The beautiful ceiling is a classic Catalan style with small beams and arches extending across the room. The rooms are furnished with wooden furniture, which is simple and modern in style. There are 4 bedrooms: 2 doubles, 1 with a double bed, and a second with 2 single beds, and 2 rooms with 1 single bed each. The living/dining room is large and full of light, with 2 double sofa beds, TV, table and chairs. The kitchen is at the far end of the living room and is completely reformed in wood and marble. It has all the amenities: washing machine, fridge, microwave, cooker, coffeemaker, toaster and more. The apartment has two full baths with shower. < hide more details

We travelled to Barcelona by car and called the contact person -- David -- from the outskirts of town. We arrived a little later than we had anticipated, so David was not there when we arrived. We called him again, and he said he would meet us in 20 minutes at the apartment. We had a beer in the cafe across the street and David showed up in about 15 minutes. Travellers might consider getting in touch with the contact person in plenty of time, if they don't like waiting. We did not find it a problem.
The lift in the building wasn't working when we were there. That meant we had to drag our suitcases up (and then back down) the narrow stairs. We were on the 2nd floor. I imagine it would be an even bigger problem for folks on the upper floors. If you're thinking of renting the rooms, you might want to ask if the lift has been fixed. Older folks or people with mobility issues may find this a problem.
The place was clean and had all that we could ask for -- kitchen implements, bedding, linens, etc. There is a small safe for valuables.
We were originally 3 travellers, but we were joined by a fourth person at the last minute. The renters were very accommmodating, and made up another room for him.
There are 2 bathrooms, with showers. The showers are VERY small & narrow. Shelves in the showers to hold soap and shampoo would be a helpful addition.
It was hot when we were there (early June) and it would have been good to have a few more fans in the apartment. There was only one. (The back side of the apartment faces an elevator shaft, so the windows there do not provide much air.)
The apartment is in busy working class, immigrant neighborhood. We loved it. It is a great area -- very close to La Boqueria market, MACBA, La Rambla, and -- best of all --the National Library of Catalonia. There is no shortage of very reasonable cafes. (If you want expensive tourist dining, just go around the corner to La Rambla, and you will find plenty of fancier places to eat and shop.)
Considerations:
1. No air conditioning. Folks who are really bothered by the heat should see if extra fans are available.
2. Stairs/Lift. The stairs are steep and narrow and might be a problem for folks with mobility problems. Check to see if the lift has been repaired.
In spite of these considerations, we were VERY pleased with the place and would definitely stay there again. We loved the neighborhood, the contact person was very helpful and accommodating, and my current favorite cafe in the world is just up the street.
We never really figured out the TV, but we didn't go to Barcelona to see TV anyway.

nice apartment, really good localization, the main street La Rambla just 3 minutes walk away, clean, washing machine is working, hot water all the time...We found this area safe and quiet but there is quite dodgy area just few blocks away..I would definitely recomend this apartment for colder days(not for the summer time as they don't have any aircon there apart from some fans in every room).Translate this guest review
