Park Güell
Park Güell (in Catalan, Parc Güell) is a large garden situated in Barcelona, on the slope of Mount Carmel, overlooking the sea, not far from the Tibidabo. Commissioned by the businessman Eusebi Güell and work of the great architect Antoni Gaudí, this park is full of typical architectural elements of Catalan Modernism. It was built between 1900 and 1914 and opened as a public park in 1922, although it was originally designed to house luxury homes. In this park Gaudi wanted to achieve the perfect harmony between his work and its natural surroundings. There are countless curved forms, like rivers of lava and sheltered alleys with columns that are shaped like trees, stalactites and geometric shapes.
Park Güell was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1969, and in 1984 UNESCO included it in the World Heritage Site list under "Works of Antoni Gaudí".
