Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 – 1969) was a German architect that nowadays is considered one of the great masters of modern architecture. He created an own unique style based in simplicity and elegance, “skin and bones” architectural style – as he used to call it.

The materials that Van der Rohe used for his buildings were innovative and modern too – glass, industrial steel, combined with marble, stone, cement. His creations give the feeling of freedom and open spaces, with a minimal structural order but at the same time with plenty of style and sophistication.

Mies van der Rohe began his architectural career in 1908 as an apprentice at the studio of Peter Behrens and he used to design upper class homes. Soon he started investigating and experimenting with new forms, trying to create an up-dated modern design. The glass skyscraper he created in 1921 was one of his first stunning projects, followed by a series of completely unique creations. In 1929 he created the German Pavilion in Barcelona and its famous Barcelona chair – nowadays you can visit a reproduction of this building located on its original site in Montjuic area. The pieces of furniture he designed also combine traditional lavish materials with modern fabrics and delicate structural frames.

This great maestro of modern architecture created a new style full of beauty and based in a whole new intellectual concept. His works represent with elegance the modern style of our era.
